Our moth trapping season has begun here at the far

Our moth trapping season has begun here at the farm and this week our ever avid moth experts found an Oak Beauty (Biston strataria). The feathered antennae indicate this one is a male and their brown banding keeps them well concealed whilst they rest on tree trunks during the day.
The caterpillar feeds on a number of deciduous trees, not just oak as the common name might suggest. This year we have planted over 250 oak trees on the farm and around 5,500 deciduous trees overall.
We are big fans of oak trees. It has been estimated that a mature oak tree supports over 2300 species of invertebrates, birds, mammals and fungi!
Our tree planting efforts will ensure we continue to encourage biodiversity and achieve our objectives here at Rowden Wildlife Project.
